Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
